Howard Parkin, well-known in Manx astronomical circles, has just published a book on astronomy, space flight and the Islands Dark Skies. The book acts as both a memoir and a tutorial guide and will be indispensable to anyone who studies the heavens from the Isle of Man and beyond.

With a foreword by retired NASA astronaut Nicole Stott, the book, which is in full colour and illustrated throughout with many spectacular images, is aimed at anyone with a casual or serious interest in astronomy and space exploration on and off the Island.

Howard says:

In recent years I have noticed that whilst many publications have some spectacular imagery of the Manx dark night skies, there appear to be no publications that specifically introduce and explain to readers both on and off-Island just what astronomical objects are visible from Manx Shores. I also wanted to make readers aware of the Manx links and contributions to the exciting world of space exploration.

With this in mind, I have now written and published a book on the subject. Space for Dark Skies,”  which I hope that it may be of interest to off-Island residents and possibly even encourage visitors to our Island.

Retired NASA astronaut Nicole Stott has very kindly written a foreword for the book, and I am most grateful to Chris, her husband, and to many others for their encouragement and support. I am also appreciative to Culture Vannin for their help and support

One of my principal aims is to make readers aware of the unique nature of the Manx Night sky. I firmly believe that the Manx night sky is an integral part of our heritage, and the book includes a chapter on the Heritage of the Heavens, in which I explore the subject throughout Manx history.

The book, which will be available in all Manx Bookshops, is £16.95 and subject to demand and interest. It is hoped that it may be available for off-Island visitors to buy via mail order. I also intend to offer the book for sale when undertaking lectures both on and off-Island.
