Agenda
- Turnip Carving Competition!: Hop tu Naa turnip carving, known in the Isle of Man as making moots, is an ancient Celtic tradition of hollowing out turnips and carving them with designs to use as lanterns on October 31st. Believe it or not, this tradition predates the use of pumpkins for Halloween! To celebrate Hop tu Naa, come prepared with your own carved turnip, squash, pumpkin, rutabaga – whatever, and be ready to share it with the group.
- Customs and Folk Lore: William Cassidy will present on the history of Hop tu Naa and its importance as a longstanding Manx tradition.
- Manx Poetry and Hop tu Naa: Lauren Collister has offered to teach the group the Manx lyrics to the traditional Hop tu Naa song. We’ll try to end the call with a nice sing along!
